The dead are among us - Chapter 10 - Run for your life

The group have just seen a horde of the undead that are heading straight for the Cul-de-sac. Geoff shouts "Run for the alleyway. see if we can get some cars from the main road and get away." They all run down the path past the houses and are around 5 meters from the alleyway. All of a sudden 6 of the undead push over the piece of corrugated scrap blocking the entrance of the alleyway. The undead spew out into the cul-de-sac and split the group in 2. Josh, Luke, Dean and Lewis get trapped on the right hand side of the alleyway whereas Geoff, Ruth, Brad, Marlon, Aisha, Jamilia, Colton and Wendy are on the left towards the house. The undead are right behind them so means they head towards the house. "Go round the back and we'll jump over the back fence at the back of the garden." shouts Marlon. He leads the charge towards the back. They manage to get through the gate on the side of the house and lock it, however it wont hold for long with the infected from the alley aswell as the horde from the other side about to press up against it. 

They get to the fence at the back of the garden and see that it is mostly clear on the other side. Geoff starts off by lifting Ruth over to check. "It looks clear. There's a few cars there that we can try to use." Says Ruth. Marlon is next to Geoff and is also helping lift people over. He is trying to get his family over first while Geoff is lifting his own. Colton shouts "They're nearly in!" As he can see the locks about to break and let dozens of the undead flock through. Marlon and Geoff have just lifted Brad, Aisha and Jamilia over and say to Colton and Wendy to hurry up. Colton grabs a shovel that's next to the fence, Turns to Geoff and Marlon and says "One of the little shits bit me just before the horde showed up. I'll buy you guys a little time. GO!" He lifts up his shirt to show a bite mark on his stomach. "Wendy, go! I love you." He kisses her and lifts her up to Geoff. The side gate suddenly breaks open and the undead start pouring in. He heads towards them and starts swinging wildly. He manages to connect with one of them on the head sending it stumbling backwards. Multiple of the undead jump on top of him and start biting into him. "AGHH!" Screams Colton. Wendy with tears in her eyes is distraught at the pain Colton is going through. She manages to wiggle herself from the grip that Geoff has got on her and jumps down onto the floor. "Get off of my husband" she cries. Wendy runs and throws one of the undead off of Colton but also get tackled by them. There are loads of them and the garden is getting filled. They start biting and clawing at Colton and Wendy who are trapped in a group that are feeding on them. Geoff with his gun in his hand says "I can't make them suffer." He aims the gun and fires a shot at both Colton and Wendys head. Blood is pouring out onto the tiled ground and runs towards the back fence.

Marlon and Geoff jump down and pull back Ruth who is trying to see what's happening. "Oh my god. Mum, Dad. No. You can't be gone" cries Ruth. "We have to go. They're gone. It's going to be okay, trust me" says Geoff whilst looking into Ruth's crying eyes. Geoff gives Ruth a big hug and kiss on the forehead. Marlon runs towards one of the cars that is there, but the door is locked. He tries to pull on the drivers side door handle a few times but this sets off the cars alarm. Brad runs to another car to see if it's unlocked. He can see that some of the herd that hadn't made it into the cul-de-sac is on the road and starts heading for them. Luckily this car is unlocked. They open the doors and they all jump in even though it is a squeeze. The key is already in the ignition and they turn it. Luckily it starts and they head down the road. They try to see if they can find there way around to check if Josh and the others had made it. The roads are all blocked however, either with cars or the undead. "We're gonna have to get out. Where are they going to know to go?" asks Marlon. "What about Uncle Deans house. It's way up north but we talked about going their didn't we?" says Brad. Geoff replies "It's hours away but it doesn't seem like we have much choice. They know where it is and we can wait for them there. Else we're not going to find them anywhere else. That group of infected must have been drawn here by all the noise from the gunshots and panic."

Meanwhile in the cul-de-sac, Josh, Luke, Dean and Lewis have just been separated from the others. They can't get to them as some of the undead are in-between them and the house where the others are running to. 3 of the undead that came from the alley run at the 4 of them. One tries to attack Lewis but he dodges out the way. He accidently drops his gun in the process. Lewis and Dean are now on the right hand side of the undead and have a clear path to the, now empty looking alleyway. Josh shouts "run for the alley we'll catch up." Dean and Lewis run down and get followed by a few of the undead. They go around the corner and there are 2 more running head onto them. They look behind to see that Josh and Luke are not there however part of the horde is right behind them. Dean aims up his shotgun and shoots one of them in the side of the head. The other is pushed down by Lewis and they run over it. 

They make their way onto an undead infested road. There are infected everywhere. They notice there's not quite as much of the undead down towards the Nisa shop so run that way. One infected comes right at Dean so he shoots it with his remaining loaded shotgun shell. They manage to dodge past a few more infected, however they realise they become trapped, right outside the Nisa store. They have their backs to one another and are looking desperately to find a way out. Lewis notices that there is a small metal fence by the side of the store that leads to a garden however it's not that accessible. They hear a voice come from the store that says "I bet you thought you killed me didn't you. Well, I guess you didn't." A man in a balaclava appears from the side of the store. He is limping on one leg where he had been shot and clearly has a bite taken out of his left arm. This is the bandit that Lewis had shot in the leg and left to die in the store. He raises his right hand that's gripping an old revolver pistol and aims it at Dean and Lewis. BANG! He shoots Lewis in the stomach and he drops to the floor. Dean Tries to shoot him with his double-barrelled shot gun but he doesn't have any shells loaded. He takes off his jacket to put pressure on Lewis' wound, but doesn't know what to do as there are undead that are around 5-10 seconds away from getting to him, aswell as a bandit that is now aiming his gun at Dean.

Back at the cul-de-sac, Josh shouts to Lewis and Dean to run down the alleyway and get away. Josh and Luke now realise that they are blocked from getting to the alley. Josh grabs the Glock 17 pistol that Lewis had dropped and looks around to see what his best options are. Him and Luke are literally cornered with there backs against a big fence. Josh shoots 3 of the undead that are right near him and Luke stabs another. The fence that they have their backs against is about 6 foot tall. Luke grabs Josh by the legs and lifts him up. As he does this he says "Quick lift me up there's no time." As josh gets his balance on the fence he tries to reach out and grab the arm of Luke. The horde however has just caught up with them and 3 of the infected attack Luke. Josh aims his gun and manages to shoot 1. Luke is fighting for his life desperately kicking out and pushing the infected back. Josh manages to grab Luke from under his armpits to try lift him however the swarm of infected start biting into Lukes legs and pull him down. "AHHHHH" he screams in anger as he's pulled to the ground and mauled by the horde.

Josh Jumps over to the other side of the fence into a garden. He decides that if he can hop over a few of the fences he might be able to work his way to the road that Dean and Lewis have just got onto. He Climbs over the first fence with ease however notices that up that garden that he's in, there is an open gate by the side of the house. This would hopefully take him directly onto the correct road however there are a few infected in the way. He makes a run for it. He is slaloming in and out of the infected making sure that he doesn't get scratched by the outstretched arms of the dead. He shuts the back gate as best he can but the road is full of infected. He makes a dash for an old red car that he sees to take cover as he is almost surrounded. He opens the door and slams it shut once in. around 20 undead are now clawing at the car trying to get in. He knows he's trapped with no possible way out.

Josh murmurs to himself, "I'm sorry mum, I'm sorry Brad, I'm sorry Geoff and Dean and Kate and Beth. I guess this is the end. I tried, like I really tried. I just can't become one of those things though." He has tears pouring out of his eyes with his head on his lap. He sits up and puts the pistol to his head. He closes his eyes and puts his finger on the trigger. BANG. A thunderous gunshot is heard for miles.
